Jeep Safaris
Ladakh offers many options for exciting jeep safari to explore its vast terrain which range from moderate to tough areas. The thrill of driving on the rough roads of Ladakh is an experience to remember for years to come. In these safaris, you get to drive across some of the world's highest roads and still higher motorable passes, features that are unparalleled anywhere in the world. The Manali-Leh road runs across 4 major passes from Rhotang to the Taglang-la (second highest motorable pass of the world). The Leh-Pangong Lake route crosses over the Chang-la pass, 3rd highest motorable pass of the world. And lastly, the Leh-Nubra road runs across the Khardong-la, which is the world's highest motorable pass and recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Following are some of the suggested programs:
Manali – Jispa – Sarchu – Tsokar-Tsomoriri-Leh -
This 4-5 day safari can be taken ideally between mid-May through September. As many as 5 mountain passes have to be crossed in this Safari. These include the Rohtang Pass (3979 mts ), Baralacha Pass ( 16,500 ft ), Nakee La ( 16000 ft ) and Tag-lang La ( 17,500 ft.) the world's second highest motorable road. A detour from Leh to Pangong Lake (151 kms.) across the Changla pass (3rd highest motorable road of the world) can be an exciting addition to this trans-Himalayan run.
Nubra Valley Route: Leh – Khalsar – Tirith- Panamik – Deskit-Hundar-Leh - This route takes you into the foothills of the Eastern Karakoram in the Nubra Valley. Ideal duration for this Safari is 3-4 days. The highlight of this safari is that you would be crossing the Khardongla Pass, the highest motorabel pass in the world. It's well worth noting hat this Safari takes a branch of the Central Asian trade route and Nubra Valley was an important corridor for this trade. Panamic, the farthest point on this route was the last outpost for the trade caravans to stop before plunging into the mountainous maze of the Karakoram pass, where they would be required to journey for day without any pasture or fodder source for the animals.
In the westen side, this sfarai can be extended to take in the Shayok route till Turtk-Tyakshi on the Indo- Pakistan LOC. The villages in this region are home to the ethnic Baltis who have their own unique cultural heritage.
